Hip-hop legends REMI and Sampa The Great at the Beachfront Hotel

Words by Steve Habibi Kelk & Pics by Jean-Eddy Moutou

The Beachy went off last Saturday with the long-awaited return of hip-hop legends REMI and Sampa The Great hitting Darwin on the last leg of their Fire Sign national tour, with great support from some of the NT’s finest.

DJ Juno opened with some sexy beats to kick start the night, followed by the formidable Indigenous band B2M, with heart-melting traditional language songs making for a very spiritual vibe in the room.

REMI (rapper Remi Kowlawole and drummer Sensible J) were enthralling as usual, with Remi bringing his phenomenal charisma and presence to the stage. His message was very powerful. Mad beats from Sensible J kept the packed house in the groove and singing along – what a great vibe these two accomplished performers bring wherever they play.

Sampa came out all fire – a great passion emanates from this petite artist and she blew up the room like a stick of dynamite. Sampa is a captivating artist to watch, her African roots relayed in her striking stage performance and in her rhymes, particularly so when joined on stage by B2M members – with yidaki (didgeridoo) melding with Sampa’s beats to make for a truly wonderful cultural enmeshment. Remi, himself of Nigerian descent (for that matter, Sensible J hails from South African migrants), also joined Sampa (along with some ecstatic punters) and completed the cultural circle. The mood was Spiritual and hypnotic, the crowd entranced and overjoyed. We cannot wait for this mix to come to Darwin again and we hope it is sooner rather than later.

Thank you to Perambulator Records and the Beachfront Hotel.

Here’s the album photo.
