Darwin singer-songwriter Kyle Maher has been doing a bit of experimenting with some genre-bending sounds lately, and the resultant track, ‘Serenity‘, is a good indication of the scope and depth that this young performer is capable of.

Noted mostly for his soulful R&B guitar work and solo performances, Maher has taken a different tack with this latest offering, a kinda rap-and-R&B mashup with ever-so-slightly glitched synth in the main riff, subtle changes here and there giving it depth. Kyle’s understated vocals also adds a layer of pure smooth.

“I don’t want to lose any inspiration I have, so what I write is really the music that I enjoy listening to, I’m not trying to fit into a clique”

Maher says of his new works that he is not trying to fit into a particular category with this direction. He also wants to have a red-hot crack at making his own music, having been gigging around town for a few years now. Says Maher: “I thought it was time to write my own music and get it out. I don’t want to lose any inspiration I have, so what I write is really the music that I enjoy listening to, I’m not trying to fit into a clique. This is just the sound I enjoy playing, and I don’t want to be stuck working in a warehouse forever, so I’m giving it a shot.”

Speaking of smooth, we can’t let this go without mentioning Kyle’s previous solo release, ‘Yellow Flowers‘, an equally silky, more traditional style track with some growly bass here and there adding a nice textual quality. Both of these tracks are home recordings given a professional mixing and mastering treatment, showing what is possible for any determined young artist to achieve with not much. It is clear from these two tracks that Kyle Maher is onto something – his style and sound are distinctly his, and his recent solo performances around Darwin were very well received.

In ‘giving it a shot’, Kyle Maher is on target to bigger and better things. ‘Serenity‘ is out today on Spotify, and you can also check out that track and ‘Yellow Flowers‘ at triple j unearthed here: https://www.triplejunearthed.com/artist/kyle-maher
