Rates Rocks The House At Darwin’s Happy Yess

Sydney rapper Rates pulled a big crowd at the Happy Yess in Darwin on October 26, supported by a litany of local hip hop talent.

The Happy Yess is certainly not Rates’ first rodeo. Having toured Australia nine times and counting, and playing slots at festivals like Big Day Out, Sprung, Breath of Life and Heatwave, the Aria-charting artist brought to Darwin his signature explosive stage show, with raw, heartfelt rhymes coined from his Western Sydney environment.

There was some deep stuff going on in his set, and we at Foldback magazine have rarely heard such a juxtaposition of passion and subtlety of lyrics coming from the one artist at a live event.

Local supports gave it their all, with the humble Rates looking on with genuine interest. We hear that Rates has a soft-spot for undiscovered talent and is a huge supporter of anyone willing to put in the hard yards to make a regional hip hop scene bounce. They could ask for no better role model than Rates.

LOCAL ACTS: Abel | Don Bray | Riley P | Schmitty | Kaotik | Task | Afterthought | Eske | Jay Mic | Popkorn | Clifton
