The Rubens Touring ‘Hoops’

Discovery, November 13 2015 | By Connor Askham

Straight off the back of releasing their latest LP Hoops, The Rubens saw their whopping 22 show Australian tour finish up in Darwin, playing their final gig to a hoard of hungry live music fans at Discovery Night Club.

The New South Wales-bred alternative rock five-piece has gone from strength to strength since their inception in 2011. Already with awards and nominations under their belt in both the ARIA and Triple J awards, they were definitely not afraid to deliver to the Darwin audience a concert that can live up to their well-deserved reputation.

Not only did The Rubens rock the house with a high-octane performance, but local supporting Darwin musicians stepped up to show what they had to offer on the big stage. Award-winning Top End musician Dave Garnham opened the evening with his soulful folk-and-blues songs to a warm reception of the early arriving crowd.

Following Dave Garnham was indie-groove-pop five-piece At The Dakota. The local lads, who have just recently embarked on their first national tour coinciding with the release of their debut EP Stories, brought to a large scale audience at Discovery their laid back tropical Northern Territory tunes with a mammoth performance. In between acts, Fletcher Kane Bowman, drummer of long-established Darwin band Roymackonkey, kept the vibe in the room up as he spun tunes under his alternate name DJ Fletch.

Once again Discovery proved a fitting venue for larger touring acts and it was very humbling to see The Rubens’ national tour wrap up in our home-town, supported by such talented local artists. No doubt the opportunity to play such a crowd and to support such an act gave the emerging ATD lads great memories and invaluable experience, but also something to aspire to for their own musical futures.
