In the year that is 2020, to indulge in live original music in a stunning tropical garden over-looking the ocean at sunset is an incredible privilege sorely missed by many throughout the world.

The first of the Darwin-based Foldback BBQ Sessions was held on the weekend at the iconic Deckchair Cinema as a part of the Darwin International Film Festival.

Hosted by much-loved local comedians Amy Hetherington and Danielle Andrews, the BBQ Sessions are a live music and comedy event and also a live film set producing stunning content for the upcoming Channel NT digital platform, showcasing the vast talent of the live original music scene here in the Northern Territory.

With the stunning ocean backdrop, and the rain so kindly dodging the Deckchair Cinema, Stevie Jean and her band kicked off the evening. Stevie showed us once again why she is at the beginning what is going to be a long and impressive career. As the sun set behind her, she sang the hell out of a string of her songs that are well-loved and garnering massive airplay.

David Garnham & The Reasons to Live took to the stage as the sky lit up and showed just why they have the reputation they do. The band, featuring 6 incredibly talented local musicians, is super tight, the banter is warm and funny and the story-telling in the songs is sublime. If you live for music like we do, this band definitely gives plenty of reasons to live!

With fans coming from as far as Tennant Creek to catch this performance, it was a pretty special gig to be a part of.

“Without the hard work of all the volunteers for the past few months and the help from all the sponsors, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve our goal. We were blessed with beautiful weather that created an excellent atmosphere at the perfect location. It was a very successful evening and as the first event of this calibre that our organisation has ever produced, also a valuable learning experience. It is truly heart-warming to see so much love and appreciation for our arts community come together in the BBQ Sessions, through the vast array of volunteers, sponsors and artists as well as the enthusiastic audience for this sold out show.  Thank you to everyone involved and in attendance for making it all possible. I look forward to see you all this Sunday for our final BBQ Sessions event.” – Director Jean-Eddy Moutou.

The night could not have gone ahead without the support of our incredible Sponsors: Dreamedia, Gigtek, NOOK Backline, De La Plage, Eva Valley Meats, Organic AG, Zip Print and Markus Dixon.

Foldback is thrilled to be partnering with DIFF to produce the BBQ Sessions live events. This year the DIFF program features live music almost every night giving a great opportunity both to artists and audience alike, as well as a fantastic array of films in the 10-day program. This initiative has come to fruition as the result of support from the Northern Territory Government via an Arts NT Virtual Territory grant which aims to showcase the incredible talent that exists in the NT, to support innovative and sustainable digital platforms and to provide employment for NT artists and art workers. Foldback sincerely thanks the Northern Territory Government for supporting Foldback and the NT arts sector, particularly during this challenging year, through the Creative Industries Sector Immediate Response and Resilience Program.

This Sunday the BBQ Sessions feature local songstress Rachel Rachel and the East Arnhem based and highly acclaimed award-winning band East Journey who are set to wow audience lucky enough to secure tickets to the sold-out event, their first Darwin-based show in a number of years.

The BBQ sessions 3-part series will be broadcast on Channel NT and Foldback’s media platforms later this year, featuring these two events held in Darwin plus a third episode produced by Aris & Grimes in Yirrkala and featuring some of the remarkable musicians of North East Arnhem Land.

Foldback Media NT aims for these productions to reach well beyond the borders of the Northern Territory to give viewers a stunning glimpse at the NT’s incredible and unique music scene and the natural environment that we are lucky to call home.
