‘Wild Women in Song was delightful, inspiring, and just thoroughly enjoyable’!
‘If you are hesitating to go, just do it. This show was amazing’!
Wild Women in Song features renowned Territory artists Tracey Bunn and Leah Flanagan and introduces two stellar young women, Gypsy Schmidt and Jayna McCallum, fresh from Battle of the School Bands.
Tracey Bunn has spent over 30 years honing her craft, touring relentlessly in venues and festivals across Australia, Ireland, Europe, and the UK, both solo and with her former band, the Toe Sucking Cowgirls. Her exuberant live shows have garnered praise around the world and her songwriting has drawn a swag of awards.
With a powerful voice and gutsy style, she grabs her audiences, finds the remarkable in the ordinary, and swings from rollicking sing-a-longs to moody ballads and tender songs of yearning. Her lyrical landscape is found in mining towns, remote pubs, luckless love affairs, and unforgettable characters. She draws inspiration from Irish shores, the seedy soul of New Orleans, 40’s jazz to Mexican Mariachi, all tied together with a blend of rootsy rock, country swing, and 60’s-flavoured guitar pop.
Her song Shutup and Let Me Breathe, was recently recorded by Aussie legend Colleen Hewitt and the video was used for Rotary’s Violence Free Families campaign.
“Her honest heartfelt songs convict her of the heinous crime of being a fine writer,
observer and teller of tales. She is a woman who demands we listen and then
delivers.” MAVERICK MAGAZINE UK
Leah Flanagan draws from the communities of cultures that have bolstered her proud Italian, Indigenous (Alyawarre) and Irish heritage to present songs steeped in maturity and knowledge that cannot be feigned. She skillfully synthesises long-formed thoughts on belonging, identity and self-knowing with her deep connection to her art.
While her individual accomplishments are many, Flanagan’s musical career continues to be interwoven by rich collaboration with some of Australia’s most luminary writers and performers including Archie Roach, Shane Howard, the Mission Songs Project, Yothu Yindi, The Spirit of Churaki and Buried Country. She has also delivered a variety of works for major arts festivals including Leonard Bernstein’s Mass for the Adelaide Festival and her own work for stage, Midnight Muses, at the Adelaide Cabaret and Sydney Festivals. Flanagan’s song Speak Your Language was covered by singer-songwriter, Alice Skye for ABC Music’s Compilation Deadly Hearts #2.
Jayna McCallum may be familiar to you as one-half of the duo Jayna and Joanne. With pop, jazz and R&B overtones she writes songs about the trials of a teenager, love, loneliness and the unavoidable pressures of life.
17-year-old Gypsy Schmidt has been brought up on a diet of Green Day and Missy Higgins, with influences including Amy Shark and Ed Sheehan. Her songwriting is exceptional, delving into complex relationships, conveying an emotional maturity far beyond her years.
