Debut Single From Son Moreta Ft Saltwater Band’s Manuel Dhurrkay

Coming out of warm, tropical Larrakia Land (Darwin), is the debut single Home (Warwuyurr), from exciting emerging artist Son Moreta, featuring the emotive, powerful vocals of Saltwater Band legend, Yolngu songman Manuel Dhurrkay.

Home (Warwuyurr), is the first track to be released off Son Moreta’s debut EP, DJAALIand provides the perfect introduction to his distinct brand of thoughtful, smooth bars delivered over laid-back beats and a plucky guitar. Expertly produced by the team at Sands Studio in Darwin and mastered by Nhulunbuy audio-genius Kris Keogh, this combination is an unexpected Electric Fields meets Hilltop Hoods vibe that, coupled with the soaring vocals and deeply moving yidaki from collaborator Manuel Dhurrkay, is the perfect recipe for a strong first release from this one-to-watch.

This single and the soon-to-be-released EP are the result of years of musical development and relationship building in the Northern Territory by Son Moreta, who spent the ‘COVID years’ in the East Arnhem community of Ramingining working in development and management with artists like Yellow Nation Band and Arafura Swamp Band.

As the name of this debut single would suggest, Home (Warwuyurr), plays with the artist’s idea of a home both in the physical sense and in the soul’s sense. Son Moreta weaves in his personal story from a childhood in Queensland, finding a home in the remote outreaches of Arnhem Land to his current immersion in the diverse, unique community of tropical Darwin. Similarly, Manuel Dhurrkay utelises the Yolngu Matha term ‘Warwuyurr’ to explain his truth behind the meaning of home as a place of family, cultural and ancestral ties.
