Daniel Champagne Gives Top-Shelf Territory Performances
Words & Pics by Steve Kelk
Percussive guitarist singer-songwriter Daniel Champagne graced the Darwin Railway Club with two superlative shows over the weekend of January 23-24, after wowing audiences with his Alice Springs shows.
The internationally-renowned soloist had the Rails audience spellbound with his minimalist approach to performance, melding rhythm, melody and vocals seamlessly to wrap the audience in a soothing blanket of sound and poetry.
Sold out on both nights, Daniel had the foresight to have local rising star Crystal Robins in support, with her sublime loop-and-effect acoustic solo set providing the perfect warm-up. What a great combination for a mellow evening of music for Darwin live music lovers this was.
Daniel is currently back on the road, heading down the track for shows in Adelaide and surrounds before spots in Melbourne and Country Victoria, then making his way around the country before a tour of New Zealand later in the year.
This young, gentle artist has a hard work ethic and clearly a desire to bring his soulful messages to as many parts of the world as he can. Playing guitar since the age of 5 and later classically trained, he turned professional after finishing school and has not looked back since, touring the world and learning from locals he befriended and resided with along the way.
This worldliness is not only reflected in his lyrics but in his manner too – there is nothing brash or self-aggrandising about this young man who has travelled wider and developed more insight than his age would suggest. Humble confidence is what he exudes on stage, albeit with a subliminal yet powerful charisma just below the surface.
We thank Daniel and Crystal for their performances at the Rails this last weekend and very much look forward to Daniel’s next Territory visit. You can learn more about Daniel at his website: https://danielchampagnemusic.com/home
