Rain or Shine, The Music Plays On

Darwin’s iconic monthly music jam ‘First Sunday Blues‘ has found a new home at Tracy Village Social & Sports Club in Darwin’s Northern Suburbs, and last Sunday was their inaugural session at the new venue.

Well-attended as always by both musos and punters, the Tracy Village folk were welcoming with cold beer, great food and excellent service as the jam unfolded in the new digs. For this auspicious event, house band Wet Funk Orchestra led by example and rocked from the first note, with lots of familiar (and not so familiar) faces then taking their slots with the usual fluidity of backing artists.

As regulars know, First Sunday Blues plays rain or shine throughout the year every first Sunday of every month, never minding the monsoonal downpours that often happen this time of year. The day stayed dry and mostly sunny however, the music Gods well pleased it seems.

From the jam’s socials: “First Sunday Blues means dozens of players come down for a friendly and inspiring jam with a different ‘house band’ each month. Musicians appreciate the low key high tech gig with ‘front of house PA’ mixed by a real sound engineer out the front. The open mic has been a big hit so, if you haven’t been before and want to get a slot, you need to put your name up on the board early, before 4pm. Young acts are encouraged to step up to the plate and will find a very appreciative crowd. First Sunday Blues is about encouraging new talent to have a go. A sound engineer, PA system & backline including drum kit, bass & guitar rigs are all provided, but BYO instrument!”

Foldback Media NT came down to capture the very first of these jams at the new venue – there were a lot of folks playing into the evening so have a good scroll – you don’t want to miss any!
